3M MS80B Monitor Stand: Is 1 Inch of Lift Enough?

The 3M MS80B monitor stand is a candidate when your screen needs a small lift and the original stand has no useful height adjustment left. Its published minimum is 1 inch, lower than the 3-inch starting point of the Kensington options in our existing comparison.

Our recommendation: consider it when a measured height setting suits you and its 15-by-12-inch footprint fits your desk. It is a lower-starting option, but it takes more space than the compact Kensington.

This is a research-based buying guide, not a hands-on test. The height diagram below explains published settings; it is not a product photograph.

Which 3M MS80B Monitor Stand Is This?

This guide covers the black-and-silver MS80B, Amazon ASIN B0006HVM5E. Match both identifiers and the package quantity before ordering; the similarly named MS85B has different specifications.

Height, Footprint, and Load

CheckPublished specification
Height range1–5⅞ inches, approximately 2.5–14.9cm
Adjustment increment1⅝ inches, approximately 4.1cm
Width × depth15 × 12 inches, approximately 38.1 × 30.5cm
Maximum load80lb, approximately 36.3kg

Amazon also lists a 3.5-inch item height. Do not read that single dimension as a fixed operating height: its title and feature list describe the adjustable range above. Follow the instructions supplied with the selected unit.

A Low Minimum Does Not Mean Fine Adjustment

The stackable columns provide discrete settings rather than continuous adjustment. Calculated from 3M’s published 1-inch minimum and 1⅝-inch step, the four levels are 1 / 2⅝ / 4¼ / 5⅞ inches. Confirm the assembly and settings in the instructions supplied with your unit. If you need exactly 2 inches of extra lift and the original monitor stand cannot compensate, the low minimum alone does not establish a fit. Start with our monitor-height guide.

Measure the additional lift needed after adjusting your chair and existing monitor stand. Compare that measurement with the available settings before purchase. The riser cannot lower an already high display, and its maximum height is not a target.

Four settings. No 2-inch setting.

Example: you need exactly 2 inches.
The first setting is 1 inch too low. The next is ⅝ inch too high. Check whether the monitor’s own stand can compensate before buying.

Original calculation: 1 inch + n × 1⅝ inches, for n = 0, 1, 2, 3. Bar heights share one scale; they do not depict the product’s shape. The 2-inch target is a hypothetical example, not a measured reader setup. Source: 3M MS80B specifications, checked October 30, 2026. Follow the supplied assembly instructions.

Check the Whole Monitor Base

Keep every load-bearing part of the base supported and count the monitor plus its original stand against the load limit. This shelf retains your existing stand; it does not require a VESA attachment. Screen diagonal alone cannot tell you whether an unusually wide or deep base fits.

Mark a 38.1 × 30.5cm rectangle on the desk. Leave your keyboard and mouse in their working positions, then check viewing distance and cable clearance. Our monitor-distance guide helps with positioning.

The advertised 11-inch space between columns describes storage width, not vertical clearance. Check the actual opening at your chosen setting before planning to slide a keyboard or laptop underneath.

When Another Support Fits Better

For a smaller footprint, compare our Kensington and VIVO small-desk riser options, remembering their higher minimum. If you regularly change screen height or reach, use our monitor arm vs riser guide to assess a different mechanism.

Choose the support that meets both your height and space requirements. A low shelf is useful only if the remaining desk area stays workable.
