Home Office Footrests: Foam vs Adjustable
Choose a home office footrest by the gap beneath your feet, then compare its surface and adjustment method. Foam, a padded frame and a rigid platform can feel and move differently. Use the five model checks below to rule out a height or space mismatch before opening seller offers.
Research-based comparison of five documented designs, not a hands-on comfort test. Published heights use different configurations; check your support gap and floor space before choosing.

First, Check Whether You Need One
Set your chair for comfortable typing before measuring the support gap beneath your feet. If both feet already rest firmly on the floor, another accessory may be unnecessary. Our footrest setup guide explains the fitting steps.
A footrest cannot shorten an overly deep chair seat. Check chair fit and your desk height first. Then compare the five height specifications or see an example where none is a verified match.
Bamboo vs foam footrest: what actually changes?
Compare the support surface and adjustment mechanism separately. “Bamboo” describes a material; it does not tell you whether the platform is fixed, tilting or height-adjustable. Check the exact model’s usable height, platform size, mechanism and floor grip.
A foam cushion adds a compressible surface. For example, ComfiLife’s published design has a detachable 2-inch layer, giving 4- or 6-inch unloaded configurations. That does not establish its height under your feet or make it equivalent to a rigid platform with the same listed height.
Choose foam for a surface preference; choose a rigid design for its documented platform and mechanism. In either case, rule out a minimum height or footprint mismatch first. Neither material alone establishes comfort or a medical benefit. The rigid models below are alternatives, not verified bamboo-product recommendations; no bamboo model is selected in this guide.

Compare What the Published Height Actually Means
| Design and guide | Published height | Space and adjustment check |
|---|---|---|
| ComfiLife Classic / Standard | 4 or 6 inches before compression; actual loaded support height is not established here | 17.5 × 12-inch cushion. Detachable 2-inch layer; no lockable platform angle. |
| Kensington K56144USF | 3.5–5-inch published range; a frame with memory-foam padding | 21.7 × 14.2-inch unit. Foot-pedal adjustment; still needs room for chair movement. |
| Fellowes Breyta | 7.9 / 11.6 / 12.6cm (about 3.1 / 4.6 / 5.0 inches), including its rocking configuration | 49 × 36cm platform. Discrete configurations; legs store underneath. |
| VIVO STAND-FT01 | 5–10.25-inch stated range; select a supported pin position rather than assuming continuous adjustment | 15.7 × 14.4-inch frame envelope. Check the 5-inch minimum; never use it as a step stool. |
| Fellowes Standard 48121-70 | 8.5 / 10.5cm nominal settings in the 2025 brochure; foot position and platform tilt still affect support | 42 × 30cm published platform, not the complete floor envelope. Rotate the base 180° to change height; verify assembled dimensions for a tight space. |
Do not equate unloaded foam height with the support height under your feet. Foam compression, platform tilt and foot position affect the final fit. A listed minimum and maximum also do not promise every intermediate setting. Measure with your chair and footwear in their usual positions, leaving room for casters, desk supports and movement.
ComfiLife Classic: For a Foam Surface
The black Classic/Standard listing uses ASIN B08DHMMBFF. ComfiLife specifies a 17.5 × 12 × 6-inch memory-foam cushion with a detachable 2-inch bottom layer. Removing that layer gives a nominal 4-inch height.
Its removable, machine-washable cover is useful if easy cleaning matters. The foam surface may suit people who work in socks or barefoot. The manufacturer also describes turning it over for a rocking position.
Trade-off: Foam compresses under your feet, so its usable support height will differ from the unloaded dimensions. The two layer configurations do not provide continuous height or a lockable angle adjustment. Choose another design if you need a consistently positioned platform.

Kensington SoleMate Comfort: For More Angle Control
Select model K56144USF, linked under ASIN B004UQ40IS. Kensington’s manufacturer product sheet specifies a 3.5–5-inch height range, angle adjustment up to 30 degrees, and a locking foot-controlled pedal. It combines a frame with memory-foam padding.
The stated unit dimensions are 21.7 × 14.2 inches across the floor, approximately 55 × 36cm. This is the overall unit size, not a promise that every part is usable foot surface.
Trade-off: Its wider footprint needs more under-desk space. The 5-inch maximum may not fill a larger support gap. The padding also means it is not an entirely hard surface. Confirm the exact Comfort model; other SoleMate versions have different specifications.

Fellowes Breyta: A Rigid Platform You Can Put Away
Shortlist the black Breyta (ASIN B0CWML9PQ7) if one of its discrete configurations suits your support gap and its 49 × 36cm platform fits the available space. The detachable legs and carry handle help with storage; they do not reduce the working platform size. Read the Breyta fit and configuration guide or check the existing black Breyta listing on Amazon (affiliate link).
VIVO STAND-FT01: For a Higher Support Requirement
Shortlist STAND-FT01 (ASIN B0763RMV58) only if a documented pin setting, starting at 5 inches, suits your setup. Its 55lb rating is for foot support, not use as a step stool or seat. The VIVO fit guide explains the setup method and unresolved platform-depth difference between the manufacturer and Amazon descriptions. After those checks, check STAND-FT01 seller options on Amazon (affiliate link).
Fellowes Standard 48121-70: A Smaller Platform With Two Height Settings
Conditional candidate: compare it if Breyta’s 49cm-wide platform takes too much space and you prefer a rigid, free-tilting surface over a foam cushion. The Amazon title names Fellowes 48121 Standard Foot Rest, Graphite; product details identify 48121-70 and ASIN B00006I62X. Match the selected variant and supplied instructions.
The 2025 Fellowes brochure, page 17, lists a 42 × 30cm platform and 8.5cm / 10.5cm height settings for 48121-70. The manual linked under 48121-70 on Fellowes’ downloads page is labelled 48121 and instructs you to rotate the base 180° to change height. This is a two-position setup adjustment, not a continuous range or a foot-pedal lift.
Rule it out if the lowest nominal setting is already too high, both feet cannot rest and reposition on the platform, or you require a verified lockable angle. We have not tested its movement, grip or comfort. The earlier US 48121 figures of 3.5 and 4⅜ inches are not substituted for the model-specific 48121-70 brochure values.

Worked Example: An 18-Inch Space and a 2-Inch Support Gap
Imagine a setup with only 18 inches of clear floor width and a roughly 2-inch support gap after chair and desk adjustments. Compare each product in its intended working orientation. The measurements are invented to illustrate selection, rather than taken from a tested workspace.
- Kensington’s stated 21.7-inch unit width exceeds the clear width. Breyta’s 49cm platform is about 19.3 inches wide, so it also exceeds it.
- VIVO’s 15.7-inch width passes that single check, but its 5-inch minimum does not match the stated 2-inch gap.
- ComfiLife’s 17.5-inch cushion width passes the initial width check, but its unloaded 4- or 6-inch height does not establish 2 inches of usable support. Do not assume an unmeasured amount of foam compression.
- Fellowes Standard’s 8.5cm lowest nominal setting is above the 5.08cm gap. Its smaller published platform therefore does not make it a verified match; the complete footprint also remains to be confirmed.
A smaller platform can still be too tall
Hypothetical support gap: 5.08cm (2 inches)
Lowest published 48121-70 setting: 8.5cm
None can be approved from these specifications for this example. Recheck the setup and compare another documented height and footprint rather than buying the nearest-looking option. A final seated check still matters when a product passes the initial measurements.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose by the adjustment you will use: a removable foam layer and washable cover, a padded frame with pedal control, a rigid platform that stores away, a higher pin-adjusted support, or a two-position tilting platform with a smaller published support surface. Confirm usable support height and working space before comparing current seller offers.
